More than School

School is more than just what we learn sitting at our desks.

We are a committed Eco-School, working on our fourth Green Flag. As part of our work on the Litter topic for this, we have produced an animated film about plastic pollution in the sea. This will be uploaded onto YouTube soon.

We are working towards becoming a Rights Respecting School, through UNICEF’s Rights Respecting Schools Award. We will be working on this over the next three years.

Last year we came 2nd in the Sustainable Enterprise awards for our cloth bag project, which makes and sells cloth bags in a bid to reduce the pollution caused by disposable plastic shopping bags. So far we have sold about 200 bags.

When we  presented our designs and prototypes in the Wave Wonder project, we were in the five finalists and were invited to the Glasgow Science Centre to present our project.

We carried out  research on Japanese Knotweed in a project about invasive species in Scotland for STEM; we came 2nd and were Highly commended.

We carried out research into the War Memorial on Eigg and created a PowerPoint presentation, as part of the  remembrances of the First World War . Many thanks to Alex Boden for help in putting the PPT together and to Camille Dressler, our very knowledgeable island historian for help in researching the families on Eigg affected by the First World War. This PowerPoint is now part of the Highland Council resources on World War 1 and forms part of the World War 1 display in the Mallaig Heritage Centre.

In February, the older children from Eigg and Muck went to Edinburgh to see War Horse, Edinburgh Castle War Museum and the Scottish War Memorial there. They had a wonderful trip, which included a trip back stage. What they particularly enjoyed was seeing the relief round the War Memorial, which showed the horses struggling in the mud, as War horse had done in the performance.

We entered art work to the European Parliament Calendar competition and Breagha was fortunate in having her design chosen for the Scottish Parliament Calendar. We were so pleased with the quality of work of all the children that we had greeting cards made of the designs. These are for sale at our fund-raising events, or direct from school at £2.00 each. They are blank inside, so suitable for all occasions.
